Four Town Fair Grounds - Somers, Connecticut

Over four days on the second weekend of September, the Fair Grounds in Somers host an agricultural extravaganza with roots that go back to a cattle show in the 1830s.

This would make it the oldest country fair, not just in New England but maybe the whole country.

The four towns in the title are East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield and Somers, and the event would rotate between these locations before a permanent site was bought in Somers in 1960. Livestock shows and competitions are still integral to the Four Town Fair, but there are also contests of all descriptions, from oxen, horse and pony-drawing to women’s skillet throwing and pie eating.

On the Saturday the main event is a parade from Main Street to the fair grounds, and each evening is rounded off with live music.

And since this is a country fair there’s lots of indulgent food and drink options like fried dough and freshly squeezed lemonade.

The apple cider donuts were amazing! Everyone was very friendly and the animals were awesome to see. By far, my favorite thing was the tractor pulls (the doodlebug competition). The tractors were huge and the amount of weight they could pull was incredible. The vendors were very nice and there was more than just carnival toys and whatnot. The only suggestion I have: bring cash for entry. There really should be an ATM at the front of the fair, but they will let you go inside the fair to withdraw cash to enter. Otherwise, my favorite fair by far!!

Had a great time... It wasn't even what we expected, GREAT FOOD!! it wasn't even crowded.. it was definitely one of the best "home town" fairs we have been to, we've been to a lot of small fairs from Maine to Florida to Colorado. Four town fair us a "must go check it out fair" for sure. The parade was awesome the rides were great had a blast on the crazy and the slide while it'll make your little ones scream in fun!!

It was an awesome time. Even in the Rain Saturday. Thought it was a lot bigger More things to do. But still for a small fair. Nicely done. Ty

I have wonderful memories of the fair. I entered chickens and rabbits in the livestock competitions every year in the sixties. Then I'd watch the horseback riding competition, my favorite part of the fair! I moved from Enfield to Orlando in '92, always looking back fondly on the fair as part of my childhood. 💕

Admission prices were good, but the rides were ridiculously overpriced. Would be nice if larger families are considered pricewise. Was happy to see the animals looked well kept. However, power went out to all of the rides mid ride. Came back on about a min or so later, definitely smthn I havent seen before, was a little scary.

Free parking is always great. Having some 12 year old wanna be security telling you how to park makes me want to run then over... Food is always good. I was able to find a food stand that sold water and soda for a dollar, everyone else charges $2. The amusement park ride operators don't speak English and look like they hate people... makes you wonder how safe the rides really are.
