Completely Unacceptable – Do Not Stay Here

Our stay at America’s Best Value Inn in Stonington, CT, was a disaster from start to finish. This hotel is nowhere near what’s advertised online, and the experience left us feeling scammed, uncomfortable, and completely unsupported by staff.

First and foremost, there is absolutely no English-speaking staff on-site. The only employee present did not speak a single word of English, making even the simplest requests impossible. He was clearly overwhelmed, overworked, and confused, which meant we had no way of getting help with anything. In an English-speaking country, there should be at least one fluent staff member available on-site—not just someone over the phone, where you have no idea who you’re talking to or where your personal information is going. Speaking of which, we had to give our credit card details over the phone to someone who sounded like a child. No receipt, no invoice, no confirmation of charges—just blind trust that we weren’t being scammed.

The room was equally unacceptable. The front door had a one-inch gap around it, letting freezing cold air pour in all night. Even with the heat blasting, the bathroom was unbearably cold. To make matters worse, there were no comforters, just thin top sheets—completely inadequate for a winter stay.

Adding to the frustration, the TV had no channels—a minor but telling sign of the overall neglect here. On top of that, despite the hotel being nearly empty, they placed us directly below the only other guests, who jumped and stomped around all night, making sleep impossible.

This hotel advertises “value,” but value is about what you get for your money, not just how cheap the price is. In this case, the value was zero. The photos online do not match reality, the service is nonexistent, and the experience is unacceptable on every level.

Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else.

If I could rate a place -5 stars I would.
First off, the place in person, the rooms and everything looks nothing like the photos online. We got to our room and it was very dirty and smelt like smoke (even though there is a no smoking policy. The guy also tried arguing saying there were some rooms that allowed smoking?!). We went downstairs and went to the front desk to ask for our refund since the room was not what they said it was online. The front desk worker AND the manager both refused to cooperate. The manager refused to talk to us and they both lied MULTIPLE times. They both refused to give us our refund. After about an hour of pushing for our refund they decided to only give us 50%?! 0/10 experience; definitely do not recommend.

The room was musty when we walked in but quickly aired out. The TV lacked any real channels. The towels were small other than the floor towels. Out of the two bath towels I got one had a questionable stain that made me not want to use it.

We visited this location from July 13-16, 2023 and I have never stayed somewhere so dismal. The pictures online and on their website are extremely outdated and do not even begin the reflect the quality of the spaces.

We reserved a one queen bedroom and the room was smaller than we’d expected, the bathroom even worse. There was enough room for a tiny coffee table, the queen bed and two side tables (which held a microwave and the only lamp in the room). The first thing we noticed was the moisture and the smell in the room. It definitely needed to be aired out. In the bathroom, the toilet was so close to the wall you had to sit on it at an angle or else you’d knock your knees! The shower was also very, very small. Like..turn the water off to wash your body and turn it back on to rinse off SMALL.

Overall, not a great experience in this ‘hotel’ and we are glad we only had to utilize it to sleep. Would recommend updating photos online and being more upfront with the sizing/amenities of this establishment.

Genuinely a foul place to stay. Hair in the bed, stains all over the sheets, gross moldy cigarette smell. THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR TWO NIGHTS… ? and the front office lady didn’t want to give a refund, but that wasn’t surprising. I’m sure they get complaints from every poor guest that has to stay there. This place should be reported to the board of health and then promptly burned to the ground.

My husband and I selected this hotel based on price. It is a simple basic needs hotel. We found it to be clean and adequate for the night. The bathroom was brand new and everything was clean. The bed was comfortable. It isn’t plush, but if you are looking for a bed and shower that is clean, and not far from the beach, this is the place! Definitely beats $200-$300+ over priced rooms simply for location.

The guy at the desk barely spoke English and was hard to understand. We were placed in rm 107 at first. As soon as you walk in the smell of mold and mildew hit you. There was mold all over the bathroom. My husband went back to the “office” and spoke to the guy seeing if there was a different room to stay in because we were not staying in that room. He moved us to a renovated room (rm 130) . That room didn’t smell as bad but still had an odor. The bathroom had a used bar of soap on top of the shower, the towels were damp and looked used. The mattresses had stains on them and the pillows felt damp. The bathroom door didn’t shut, the refrigerator didn’t work and the front door had about a 1inch gap under it. We sucked it up and stayed for 1 of the nights, (I wish we just left that night) but found better accommodations for the rest of our trip.
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone. I wouldn’t even give it 1 star.
