I had a deeply disappointing and humiliating experience at Frager’s Hardware on Penn Ave SE due to the behavior of Christopher, the cashier. As someone newly adjusting to life with a disability after a hit-and-run accident last August, I’ve had to learn to ask for help when needed.

When I came into the store with my cane, I was able to gather everything I needed without issue. But when I reached the register and asked Christopher to redistribute the weight of my bag to make it easier for me to carry, he chose to mock me instead. He exaggeratedly pretended to walk while holding the bag, as if making fun of my request. When I asked again—politely—for him to either double-bag it or adjust the weight distribution, he outright refused. I ended up having to do it myself while he stood there.

This was not just unhelpful—it was disrespectful and humiliating. No one should have to experience that kind of treatment, especially when asking for a simple and reasonable accommodation. I hope the management takes action to ensure that their employees treat all customers with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Been coming here for years, always friendly helpful staff and it’s a great store. Has just about everything you need, a great garden store/section too. It was quite busy before the snow storm and staff were working hard to keep the line moving and expedite as much as possible. Thank you!

If I could give 0 stars I would and I don't normally write bad reviews, but this was truly warranted. I've frequent this location, because I aim to support local if I can. I have never had a bad experience until recently. I purchased a few light bulbs for my over and under my kitchen cabinets from a different Ace Hardware location in the district. Went home to install them and realized it was the wrong size, so I went to Frager's to see if they had the size I needed. I spoke with an associate and he was extremely friendly and tried to help me find what I needed, but they didn't have the correct size. From there I picked up a few other items I needed and headed to the counter to return the light bulbs and purchase the other items.

I walked up to the counter and was met pretty apprehensively by the Assistant Manager, Larry. I explained that I was returning the light bulbs, as the store didn't house the size I needed and handed him my receipt. The other items I stated I was purchasing. He began to look up each item I was returning to verify they had them in the store. I thought it was odd, so I stated that they for sure have them because I was just on the aisle with an associate that was helping me. He didn't acknowledge what I said, dismissively and continued to look up the items. He then asked for my name and ID, which I found odd. Again, I've never had any issues at there store and I felt discriminated against over two light bulbs that were under $9-10 per item. If I have a receipt and the items SKU numbers match, why would you have to look up the items? It seemed as if he thought I stole the items and was trying to return them. I'm writing this here, because he was a manager. All ACE Hardware stores are independently owned, so you can't address concerns with corporate, because the managers are corporate. I won't refer anyone to this location anymore.

If you read this, Larry, please know that it's us common citizens that keep businesses running. Treat all customers fairly and you'll reap large benefits. Do the inverse and you'll reap the consequences. I try to support independent and locally owned businesses and this is what I get in return, stereotyping and discrimination.

I love it that Frager's has exactly what I need and the staff are so willing to listen and help. I also like the fun extras the store has like catnip in hilarious pouches and other little odd things to make my friends and family surprised for my little unexpected gift giving.

A hardware store like they used to be! You can get pretty much anything you need here. They also have a plant shop attached. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, I have always had positive experiences and left with everything I needed (and then some 😊). This place is a DC classic and I highly recommend it for household needs.
