Left of the Dial Record Shop - A Gem with Character

I've been supporting this shop since Bill first took it over in its small, dark, and somewhat dinky downtown Santa Ana location. Back then, it had a certain charm, and I scored some great speakers and equipment at prime prices--really felt like I was getting a deal. Bill's always been fair when it comes to pricing, and you can tell he's passionate about the record game.

That said, Bill has his moments. He's approachable and cool most of the time, but there've been occasions when he's been short or brash. I get it--owning a record store isn't the corporate customer service world, and that's part of the appeal of these kinds of shops. Still, a little more of that welcoming vibe would go a long way, especially when customers come in hoping for some guidance on records, equipment, or trades.

Since moving to the Orange location, the shop's definitely leveled up. The space is utilized well with live shows and events that create a great community vibe. You can see that Bill has a vision and is making it happen, which is awesome. But when it comes to the day-to-day interactions--whether it's trading goods or asking about equipment or pressings--things can feel a bit transactional. If you're like me, you'll go in, do your digging, and maybe strike a deal without expecting too much conversation or help.

I get that not every shop owner is going to want to be a beacon of information or up for long discussions about records and equipment, but it's a little disappointing when you're brushed off during a genuine inquiry. That said, I've got nothing but respect for what Bill's doing, holding down a record shop in an age where that's no small feat.

Left of the Dial is still a gem, especially for those who love the thrill of the hunt and appreciate a space dedicated to vinyl and vintage equipment. I hope the shop keeps going strong and remains a part of the community for years to come.

Called in to ask if they take any vinyl records, I forgot his name but he was very kind and let me know I can get them appraised. I thanked him for offering that but I have no knowledge of them and I would rather just donate. They looked super old maybe I had around like 60 of them. I am glad he was able to help me unload them from my car. I hope they go to someone who will enjoy them.

Very solid record store with a neatly organized and large rock section. If you're new to the scene or this is your one true passionate hobby, this store as well as their staff is a good start!

They have mostly rock, as expected, and a sprinkle of a lot of other genres but it's not as big or diverse as I hoped. This wasn't a big deal though and I always have a good time looking through records. There's a lot of boxes of cheap/used vinyls that you can sift through as well.

The shop guy was sooo nice and friendly and gave some great recommendations to discover new music as well (Thanks for the Robin Trower recommendation). So if you're feeling experimental he'll help you out for sure. He's very knowledgeable and I'd highly recommend asking any questions

I'll check out some more record stored in the area first but I'll definitely be coming back here again after

What a great store!!!

Came all the way down from Vancouver to check this place out, and was able to find a Plimsouls record I’d been looking for, as well as the second of the two Brains albums (the one I was missing).

Met Bill, and he could not have been a nicer dude.
Gave me a free canvas bag, as well as a Darius and The Magnets album.

Highly recommend you stop by this shop for the vibes, hospitality, and more than reasonable prices .

Thanks, Bill!

A pleasure meeting you, talking with you, and visiting your store.

I will be back in March for sure.

This place was a very pleasant find. The store is spacious and clean. Though not the biggest inventory, what they do have is great. You should have no problem finding quality albums in many diverse genres. The organization is amazing, which makes browsing a joy. Prices are very fair.

One of my favorite stores In OC. Bill always has a killer selection, knows a lot about music, and is always very friendly. There are a lot of great stores in OC worth visiting, but if youre out shopping for records, DO NOT SKIP LEFT OF THE DIAL, if you don't want to miss out on some great stuff!!

OGs that aren't steep, do not sleep... Don't overlook the $1 bin. DITC ?

I don't usually blow my spots but I want this place to thrive as they have a true and humble vibe. Old and new, there's something for everyone. Good genre selection, Rock to Jazz to Hip Hop etc etc etc. Not the biggest space so don't expect to dig for hours and hours, they do have enough to make it worth your while though. That's not to say that you won't leave with 50+ pieces, lol.

Bill it was a pleasure man, you've made a customer for life. For the love of music, everyone's journey is different but they're all worthwhile. Until next time... ?✌️
